Mycophenolic Acid / Mycophenolate Mofetil
Mycophenolic Acid (MPA) and its derivatives such as Mycophenolate Mofetil (MMF), have diverse biological properties such as antineoplastic, immunosuppressive, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antipsoriasis and antifungal activity. Recent observations in experimental animal and human recipients of MMF showed this compound to have immunosuppressive properties. Moreover, MMF in combination with Cyclosporin-A (CyA) decrease the incidence of graft rejection to 17% in comparison with 60% in cases when only CyA was given to human.

It is also reported that MMF has several advantages over CyA for maintenance therapy of organ graft recipients. MMF was reported to be well tolerated with low toxicity. MPA is produced by several species of Penicillium in submerged culture, while MMF is an esterification product of MPA.
